Software Tutorials
|
| |
Even with experience using word processing programs and Acrobat,
some students find that they need help with a large
document like a theses or dissertation. Below are several options for tutorials with your ETD. |
| |
1. New Media Center |
| |
The New Media
Center (on the Blacksburg campus) has training
sessions and staff to assist you. Their lab has
machines on both the PC and Mac platforms. They also have machines set up for editing multimedia. Check their web site for
current hours, applications and equipment available. |

2. The Software Skills
Gateway |
| |
This site is your main entry to two tutorial sites. The tutorials are free to Virginia Tech students.
You may take as many as you like at any time. You only need your VT PID and password to access these tutorials.
Element K offers 600 interactive tutorials which cover office productivity, web development and other software in depth. (Email elementk@vt.edu for more information.)
Atomic Learning offers 3000 short movies which show viewers how to perform specific tasks such as working with toolbars in Word or saving
a spreadsheet as a web page. They cover office, graphics and web development products from Microsoft, Adobe, Apple and Macromedia and are
not interactive. |

3. ETD Tutorial |
| |
This tutorial was created to help you learn how to convert your own thesis or dissertation into a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat
Standard or Professional. This lesson was written for Acrobat 6 Standard or Professional. However, you should easily be able to duplicate the following steps in later versions of Acrobat. You
must have the software installed on your computer to create a PDF file. Acrobat Reader, which is freely available for downloading from many Internet sites, can only be used to read a PDF file.
You cannot use it to create a PDF file.
